Chester Yacht Club

Welcome to the Chester Yacht Club

Chester Yacht Club | Chester, NS

Chester Yacht Club | Chester, NSChester Yacht Club (CYC) is a private sailing club situated on beautiful Mahone Bay with excellent access to the best sailing in Canada. CYC is host to Canada’s largest keelboat regatta, Chester Race Week, the much-anticipated and highly regarded annual Opti Jam dinghy regatta, and is home to robust and internationally respected IOD and Bluenose fleets. Our objective is to encourage Club members to become more proficient in the personal management, maintenance and handling of their boats; to promote safety, proper navigation and seamanship; to provide social and instructional activities in the interests of all Club members and their guests; and to enhance the sport of sailing within our membership and community.

September Message from CYC Commodore

CYC Members,

It’s been some time since I’ve put out a notice to the membership, and there’s certainly been a lot happening around the Club over these very active summer months.

Let me start by saying I hope everyone has been having a great summer at the Club. September is generally one of the best weather months we get, so hopefully there’s still plenty of time to enjoy the Club and get out on the water.

I hope you’ve also taken notice of how good the Clubhouse is looking. A big thank you to the folks at Chester Builders for all the fine work completed over the fall and spring. They’ve been a great partner to work with as part of our designated infrastructure improvement work.

Reflecting on the summer, I’d also like to say a big thank you to everyone who supports the many initiatives that happen at the Club — weekly evenings and socials, racing, the Poker Run, CRW, and all the efforts associated with Learn to Sail, including a very successful Adult program.

It takes a tremendous amount of support from our membership to deliver all the activities that happen at the Club throughout the year. More on all of that later.

So, When Is the AGM?

As the summer draws to a close, several folks have been asking when this year’s AGM will be held.

If you recall, last year we agreed to move the AGM to late October/November so that we weren’t rushed trying to deal with Club business during the busiest part of the summer. We also agreed that the previous year’s financial review would take place earlier in the year rather than waiting until the AGM.

The 2025 Financial Review took place back in June. We will certainly take questions if there are any, but rather than spending a lot of time going back over last year’s numbers at the AGM, we’d like to use the time to give everyone a glimpse into this year’s financial performance. That’s one of the benefits of moving the AGM date.

We do encourage everyone to take the time to watch the recording of the 2025 Financial Review meeting, as there will be a vote on the 2025 Financial Statements as part of the AGM proceedings.

This Year’s AGM

The CYC AGM will be held on Wednesday, November 4th via Zoom.

The meeting will be recorded, but as usual, a quorum will be needed to support voting on the Financial Statements and the Election of Officers.

For those attending the meeting, Zoom voting will be used, similar to what we did during the 2020/21 period. Normal advance voting will also be available through the email address registered with your membership if you’re unable to attend the live meeting.

As usual, the formal notice and associated voting items will be published at least 10 business days ahead of the AGM.

A Transition in the Executive

This year we’ll see some changes in the active Executive team as term limits come into play.

One of the things we’re trying to accomplish is a more cyclical transition process, where no more than two Executive positions transition at any one time. This should allow us to maintain a good degree of continuity and experience as changes take place into the future.

Here’s where things currently stand:

Commodore — Jennifer Chandler
Jennifer’s term is up this year after serving two two-year terms.

Vice Commodore — Cathy Ross
Cathy’s first two-year term is up, but she has agreed to continue for one additional year. This will help us begin implementing an offset in this position.

Rear Commodore (Water) — Dave Tzagarakis
Dave’s term is up this year after serving two two-year terms.

Rear Commodore (Infrastructure) — Chris Campbell
Chris’s first two-year term is up, but he has agreed to continue for one additional year to help establish an offset in this position.

Treasurer — Whipple Smith
No change here. Whipple is one year into her two-year term, and we hope she’ll continue into the future, which would also help with the offset approach.

Your Club Needs You!

Serving on the Executive is a tremendous opportunity to bring fresh ideas, energy and perspective to help shape the Club and its future.

But the bigger point is that this is a community club, and it relies heavily on volunteer commitment to sustain everything we do. A small number of highly engaged individuals can’t carry the Club forever. We need more members to consider how they might be able to contribute — and it doesn’t necessarily mean taking on a major role.

There are lots of ways to get involved, for example:

  • Executive Positions
  • Committee support to rebuild specific areas such as Finance, Grounds, Long Range Planning, etc.
  • Club Race Committee management
  • Flag Officer support for trophies
  • Learn To Sail Program Support
  • Event and weekly social support
  • And plenty of other opportunities that might match your interests and experience

So, please, please, please don’t be afraid to raise your hand!

If there’s an area you’d like to explore, or if you know someone who you think would be a great addition but might be a little too shy to put their hand up themselves, please reach out to us at [email protected].

The Club has a tremendous wealth of knowledge, experience and talent among the membership. We’d love to find ways to tap into that and have more people involved in making CYC the Club we all want it to be.

And Finally…

There’s still lots of sailing, socializing and hopefully a few more great days at the Club before we officially put another summer in the books.

Thanks again to everyone who has helped make this another busy and successful season at CYC. Whether you’ve been racing, cruising, helping out behind the scenes, organizing an event, or enjoying the Club socially — you’re all part of what makes CYC what it is.

Enjoy the rest of September, make the most of the good weather, and we’ll see you around the Club!

Cheers

Jennifer
